CALIFORNIA LIVING PROJECT II: PALO ALTO  will project 20 individual films of 16 different interior lifestyles, part candid and part performed, directly onto the facades of houses – covering several community blocks– in the Greenmeadow neighborhood of Palo Alto, California on June 10th, 2017.

Community members were asked to participate and collaborate alongside visual artist, Nate Page and dance artist, Chelsea Zeffiro to create a log of filmed performances over a period of three months.

Open to the public from sunset to midnight, spectators can enjoy snapshots of the interiors and personalities within a community which influenced and determined each film – from collaborative, site-sensitive dances between professional dancers and homeowners to the less performative and more personal documentation of intimate moments & spaces.

This large-scale video & dance installation uses the iconic mid-century Modern tract homes of developer, Joseph Eichler as both the setting and backdrop – turning houses inside out, displaying a range of performances – from the mundane to the spectacular.

Visitors are invited to take a self-guided exploration for a somewhat voyeuristic stroll through a Modernist paradox: demonstrating both isolation and openness and activating the space between.

Maps will be provided of the illuminated blocks at the Greenmeadow Community Center:

303 Parkside Dr, Palo Alto, CA 94306

Nate Page is a Los Angeles based artist, working site-specifically to bring an emotional awareness to the psychological implications of designed environments. Page purposely acts as a non-expert visitor and observes a location as a construction of someone else’s plan. Instead of drawing what he sees, he intervenes directly in the space.  Architecture, Landscape and Design are ultimately a site of exchange – similar to the act of image making and viewing, where conscious and unconscious Ideologies and Value Systems are expressed and interpreted by the absent designer, the community and it’s inhabitants. Page received his MFA from California Institute of the Arts and a BFA from Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design In 2011 he was the recipient of California Community Foundation Emerging Artist Fellowship.
